One of a kind. A rare matched pair of antique Indian pidha chairs — the low, ceremonial seat of Rajasthan, hand-carved and brass-studded, and traditionally given as part of a bride's dowry.

The pidha is among the oldest furniture forms of northern India: a low chair, only inches off the ground, brought out for everyday floor-level seating and for ceremonies like Haldi and Mehndi. The denser the carving and the more brass it carried, the more important the occasion — and a finely studded pair like this was the kind of piece that traveled with a bride into her new home. Pairs that have stayed together are uncommon; single pidhas far outnumber them.

Each chair is hand-carved hardwood, studded with brass (pital) rosettes, with a hand-woven rope back and seat and a turned spindle gallery beneath. The hand-embroidered cushions are included. Genuine age, patina, and small irregularities throughout — the marks of a piece that has actually been lived with.

Size: 24"W × 17"D × 28"H each. Sold as a pair. Ships from our Houston warehouse.
